The excitement is mounting with Bead-Treat – BeadFX’s first major sponsorship of a weekend retreat – coming in less than six weeks! “Retreats like these are common in the United States,” says Marg Yamanaka, owner of BeadFX. “This is our first foray into creating and sponsoring a weekend retreat. I’m looking forward to doing something like this every year.”
Bead-Treat features three classes with three well-known BeadFX instructors. Each will be teaching a project reflecting their specialty. Participants will rotate through all the classes, having the opportunity to learn all three projects.
Learning a new skill won’t be the only highlight during the weekend. “We’ve gotten great sponsorship from several of our suppliers,” says Marg. “Each person will receive a tote bag of merchandise. John Bead, Tierra Cast, BeadSmith, and Caravan Beads are major suppliers and have all contributed to Bead-Treat’s goodie bags. The bags themselves are coming from a Calgary business that specializes in retreats.” All the participants are invited to Friday evening’s Meet and Greet visit with the instructors and other guests in an informal atmosphere. Saturday evening will feature an open beading time at which participants can work on projects or just chill out in the company of others.
The full May 4 – 6 weekend experience is $450 CAD HST. This includes all three classes, all of the class materials and instructions, the goodie bag, evening activities and admission to Pin-It Canada. Accommodations and food are available through Fanshawe College, the location of Bead-Treat and Pin-It Canada.
The Bead-Treat classes are:
Staggered Byzantine Bracelet with Marilyn Gardiner
A statement bracelet at its best!
We will start the day by making a pair of Byzantine Earrings so everyone learns the basic Byzantine weave and is comfortable with opening and closing jump rings. There are a lot of jump rings required to make this bracelet, but you will be well on your way to completing it by the end of the day (though some may actually finish). This class will run 10:00am to 5:00pm on all days with a lunch break.
This class includes a kit to make your bracelet in copper. It includes step-by-step, illustrated instructions, 1 main size of jump ring and a coordinating clasp. Makes up to a 9 bracelet. All rings are saw-cut and polished.
Swarovski Trillion Component Bracelet with Pamela Kearns
Seed beaded dimension and form!
We’ll start the class by learning how to do simple triangular peyote using larger beads before we graduate to using size 11/0 Delicas. Then the fun will begin by learning to create a triangular bezel. Increases and decreases and zipping your components together will be part of the day’s curriculum. This class is suitable for beginners; however, knowing peyote stitch will be helpful.
The project will focus on making the bracelet as shown, but you’ll also have the instructions on how to create two pendants and earrings – all using the same type of rivoli component. This class will run 10:00am to 5:00pm on all days with a lunch break.
This class includes your kit of 12 Swarovski Trillion rivolis, 2 colours of size 11/0 Delica beads and a sliding tube clasp and findings with full-colour, illustrated instructions. Colour choices will be available.
Knotted Fibre End Caps with Angela Peace
Join the fiber and micro-macrame revolution!
In class, you will learn the knotting techniques and how to change the end cap size for a perfect fit. Youll also learn how to make a knotted fiber clasp. By the end of the class you will have a pair of custom end caps and will be well-prepared to make more. This class will run 10:00am to 5:00pm on all days with a lunch break.
This class includes illustrated instructions, C-lon knotting cord in your choice of colours, jump rings, pinning board, tapestry needle, and pins.
Participants will also have access to Pin-It Canada, a consumer trade show occurring at the same location. Pin-It promises to bring together vendors in various creative media including painting, paper crafting, jewellery making, and mixed media.
